Senior Match Reports-3rd October 2020

1st XV- Portadown 1s welcomed Cooke for the 2nd League Fixture of the 2020/21 season. In what was a close game from start to finish, Portadown scored two Penalties through Centre Chris Cousens, while Cooke converted one of their own, leaving the score to be 6-3 to the Blues at half-time. In the second half, Portadown worked hard and played well, but they couldn’t finish their chances, while Cooke was able to touch down twice, leaving the final score 6-13 towards the visitors.  Despite another good performance, Portadown were let down by their ability to finish their attacking threats. Next week, the 1s are on the road to take on Grosvenor in Belfast.

2nd XV-In the first League Fixture of the year, Portadown 2nd XV welcomed Enniskillen to Chamber’s Park. The Blues came out of the gates faster, taking control of the game with a strong running backline led by Brandon Gribben, and a dominate scrum. This scrum led to the first score for the Portadown men as William Holden took the ball at the back of a 5 metre scrum and dotted it down. Enniskillen responded with a try themselves but at half-time, Portadown led 10-7. The second half was as exciting as the first, with some fine running rugby. The lead switched hands with Enniskillen scoring again after the break, then replacement winger Darryl McCarten creating his own chance, running down the wing, and cutting through the skin’s defence to touch down for a great try.  Unfortunately, Enniskillen came back in the last 5 minutes to score and Portadown couldn’t find a way to change the score, leaving the final score to be 20-26 for the visitors. While there was lots of positives that the players can take from this game,  they can also feel that the game was there for the taking.

4th XV- Portadown 4’s lost 24-3 in their second league game of the year. The opposition again was Banbridge, this time it was their 6th XV. Playing in the minor south league, the away team started the stronger but the home team weathered the storm and at half time it was 17:3 after a penalty by Man of the match David Whitten. Andrew Stevenson had a solid game in his first game for the fours. Solid performances also by Sam Close, Andy Brisbane, Jonny Hampton and Elvinas Kilimonis who was strong in both attack and defence.
After half time the fours responded well but could just not take their chances. Next week the 4th XV are away to Ballynahinch 6s.
