Portadown RFC had a overall successful weekend, with a number of teams running out in blue, across the country.
Starting with the youth teams, both the Boy’s Under 16s and Under 18s recorded great victories, with the Under 16 beating Newry at home 17-8 and the Under 18s travelling to Carrick to win 0-10. Great to see some superb results from the youth teams. As well in youth level, Portadown College also recorded a superb local derby win in the Under 16s cup, beating Lurgan College 59-0.
Saturday had perfect conditions for rugby, as Portadown’s Men’s 1st XV hosted top of the table side Clogher Valley 1st XV in a league fixture.
A big thanks to Pat Grant and the team from Granco (www.grancotrucks.com) who were our prematch sponsor on Saturday for the game vs Clogher Valley. Also pictured are club President Ciaran O’Kane and Clogher Valley President Eric Mitchell.
After a tough loss two weekends ago verses Enniskillen, Portadown named a strong starting XV looking to respond and build on their performance from last time. Unfortunately, the visitors started and continued in their recent form, attacking well and managed to score three tries during the first half. Portadown also attacked well, just not managing to convert their pressure into scores each time.
Portadown continued to apply the pressure before half time and finally, after great pressure and patience in the Clogher 22 metre line, experienced Prop Rab McClean arched around the corner of a ruck, bouncing through and touching down in the corner.
The second half continued in much the same way as the first, as Clogher continued their dominance around the park, despite the best intentions of the Portadown team. Portadown managed to touch down again finally through Drew Flack after a well worked backline effort but at the end of the match, Clogher were the deserved winners with the final score being 47 – 12.
The 3rd XV travelled to Dromore in a great streak of form, with the 3s looking to win 3 on the trot. With an exciting mix of youth and experience, Portadown brought their flair and exciting brand of rugby to the Dromore boys, which led them to a resounding 18-34 victory.
Our Ladies rounded off the weekend by hosting Queens at Chamber’s Park on Sunday. The match kicked off promptly at 1pm with Queens quickly scoring their first try inside 5mins. This was then converted bringing the score 0-7. This was a bit of a slow start for Portadown, the ladies were over run which led onto another try and conversion for Queens bringing the score to 0-12, but after this, they started to get stuck in, not be put down on their home turf and Jennifer McCall succeeded in getting the ball, making a clean break for the try line! Ellen MacMahon scored the conversion, with the score then 7-12. Unfortuately, Queens struck twice before the break and lead going into half time 7-26.
Starting back in the 2nd half, the Portadown Ladies were getting into gear and coming back with a fight. Another outstanding try by Jennifer McCall followed by conversion to from Ellen MacMahon brought the score to 14-26. With Queens were beginning to tire, this lead to lose a few of their girls to injuries. Portadown were on form and playing some excellent rugby, however Queens got in with another try and conversion. .Not long off full time, and our own Holly Bothwell played a great role in scoring our last try of the game with Ellen MacMahon converting, leaving the final score 21-33 in favour to the visitors but overall both teams played a great game.
