Ulster Rugby is continuing a participation programme which will create a space in the rugby season for young players across School & Club rugby to come together in a safe, fun environment at their local club.

The Club/School Window means that players who play only in School can now join in with activity at their local club in March and April as a new way to experience the game at the end of the Schools’ season.

The fun, participation focus of this delivery also offers a unique opportunity for new players to take their first steps into the game.

This programme sees clubs across the province offer a range of activities, both on and off the pitch which have been designed to allow players to choose the rugby experience that is right for them.

During this time, we hope to see players re-connect with those clubs where they previously played mini rugby, as well as the opportunity for new connections to be made for those players who have been introduced to rugby through their school.

Ulster Rugby’s Annual Participation Review 2020/21 revealed a significant drop out of players and teams throughout the course of school lives, and subsequent transition into adult rugby.

Following a period of consultation with the Young Persons Advisory Group, (a newly formed body to engage the views of our young players), and subsequent engagement with the relevant committees within the Ulster Branch, the Club/School Window has been designed in recognition of needs of young players to create an opportunity that they have asked for.

Ulster Rugby Operations Manager Barry Willis:

“Since the Ulster Rugby Adult Participation review was published in April 2021, representatives of the Ulster Branch have been hard at work to bring the recommendations to life.  The development of the Club/School Window is a specific action to address the lack of connection that young players have told us they feel to their local clubs, particularly those engaged in Schools’ rugby.”

“The window now offers space in the rugby season for players from Club and Schools streams to come together, explore new connections and friendships and ultimately have fun at their local clubs.”

“The superb array of clubs in Ulster have been working hard, preparing for the window, and have put together a programme that offers a variety of experiences, on and off the pitch that we hope will appeal to young, local players.  This might include challenge games with other clubs, more informal rugby offerings of Tag or touch rugby or social activities to invite young players into the club, to enjoy the famous hospitality and family environment that rugby has to offer.”

“Within the programme, we believe there is an offer and a place for everyone, where young people can choose what they want from their rugby experience.”
