RIP Freddie Watson

It is with great sadness that we must report the passing of our dear friend and clubmate Freddie Watson. Freddie was a much-loved member of Portadown RFC and served for many years as the chair of our selection committee.
Many of us will however remember him more fondly for his refereeing. For over 30 years Freddie was the man in the middle, officiating in senior, youth and school’s fixtures. Much to the stronger team’s frustration Freddie would always manage to level the playing field and ensure everyone had a good day out. Penalties for ungentlemanly conduct, celebrating a score and talking back to the referee were often awarded (amongst many other dubious decisions) to help the less experienced side gain a foothold in a game. Freddie had the foresight to know how important it was for everyone to enjoy their game on a Saturday.
Although Freddie had been ill for some time it was great to see him down at the club recently supporting his Grandson Ted playing for the U16’s.
All at the club would like to offer our deepest sympathies to his wife Pat, his children Jane, John Katherine and Judith and the rest of the family. The funeral will be held on Tuesday with the house and funeral strictly private.

  1. Neil Hunter says:

Freddie was just one of the best. All the Hunters are just so glad that we were lucky enough to know Freddie. He was a true gentleman.

Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

    Maureen, Alan, Neil & Graeme.
